Ping

Internet Glossary icon

Ping is a utility used in computer networking to check the connectivity and response time between a source device (usually a computer) and a target device or host on a network, typically using the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP).

Ping sends a small packet of data (an ICMP echo request) from the source device to the target device or host and waits for a response.

While Ping is a straightforward tool for basic connectivity testing, it may not always provide a comprehensive analysis of network problems, especially in cases involving more complex issues or situations where ICMP traffic might be blocked by firewalls or network configurations. Nonetheless, it remains a fundamental tool for network troubleshooting and basic connectivity checks in many networking scenarios.
