The term “Metaverse” refers to a collective virtual space or environment created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR), where users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users in real time.

The concept of the Metaverse originated from science fiction, notably popularised by Neal Stephenson’s novel “Snow Crash” in 1992. It describes a vast, interconnected digital universe that users can access through immersive technologies, where people can interact, work, play, create, and engage in various activities.

Key characteristics of the Metaverse include:

  1. Immersive Experience: Users can engage with the Metaverse through immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), allowing for a sense of presence and interaction within a digital environment.
  2. Persistent and Shared Space: The Metaverse is a persistent, interconnected space that exists independently of individual users. Changes made within this environment are often visible to others and persist across interactions.
  3. Interconnectedness: It’s a networked environment where users can seamlessly move between different virtual spaces, socialise, collaborate, and experience diverse activities, regardless of geographical location.
  4. Diverse Activities and Experiences: Users can engage in a wide range of activities, including socialising, gaming, education, business meetings, entertainment, shopping, and more, within this digital realm.

Several technology companies are actively working on developing aspects of the Metaverse, with visions of creating expansive digital worlds that combine virtual experiences with elements of the real world. Concepts like virtual reality, augmented reality, blockchain, digital currencies, and persistent online environments contribute to the building blocks of what the Metaverse could become.
