Metadata refers to descriptive and structural information that provides context or details about a particular piece of data, content, or information. It essentially serves as data about data, offering insights into the characteristics, attributes, and context of the primary information.

Metadata can include various types of information depending on the context, such as:

  1. Descriptive Metadata: This type of metadata describes the content, including titles, summaries, keywords, abstracts, and other attributes that help categorise and identify the primary data.
  2. Technical Metadata: It includes details about the technical aspects of the data, such as file formats, size, resolution (in the case of images or videos), encoding, data structure, and other technical specifications.
  3. Administrative Metadata: Administrative metadata contains information about the creation, ownership, rights management, access controls, and other administrative aspects related to the data or content.
  4. Structural Metadata: This type of metadata defines the structure or relationships between different parts of the data, such as the hierarchy or organisation of content in a document or a website’s sitemap.
  5. Behavioral Metadata: Behavioral metadata captures information about user interactions, behaviours, preferences, or patterns related to the use of the data or content. It can include user engagement metrics, browsing history, or user-generated tags.
