Meta tags are snippets of code embedded in the HTML source code of a web page that provide metadata about the page’s content to browsers, search engines, and other web services. These tags do not appear visibly on the webpage but offer information about the page’s title, description, keywords, character encoding, and other details that help search engines and browsers understand and display the page appropriately.

Some common types of meta tags include:

  1. Meta Description Tag: This tag provides a brief summary or description of the webpage’s content. It’s often used by search engines to display a snippet of text in search results, providing users with an overview of the page’s content.
  2. Meta Title Tag: The title tag sets the title of the webpage, appearing as the headline in search engine results and the title displayed in the browser’s title bar or tab.
  3. Meta Keywords Tag: This tag was historically used to list relevant keywords or phrases related to the page’s content. However, major search engines like Google no longer use this tag for ranking purposes due to misuse and spamming practices.
  4. Meta Charset Tag: Specifies the character encoding used on the webpage, ensuring proper rendering of text and special characters.
  5. Meta Viewport Tag: Particularly relevant for mobile-responsive web design, it defines how the webpage should be displayed on various devices, adjusting the viewport and scaling of the content.
  6. Meta Robots Tag: Instructs search engine crawlers on how to index or follow links on the webpage. It can direct crawlers to index the content, not index it, follow links, or not follow them.
