Hits

In the context of web analytics or website traffic analysis, “hits” typically refers to the total number of requests made to a web server for any resource – such as a web page, image, script, or file – during a specific period. However, the term “hits” can be ambiguous and might not accurately represent website traffic.

Hits count every single request made to the server. For example, when a webpage is loaded, it might include various elements like images, CSS files, JavaScript files, etc. Each of these elements represents a separate hit when requested from the server.

Hits can be an imprecise measure of website traffic as it counts every file requested, not necessarily every page view or unique visitor. Consequently, a high number of hits does not directly translate to high website traffic or user engagement.
