Extranet

An extranet is a controlled private network that allows organisations to securely share specific resources, information, and data with external users, such as partners, suppliers, customers, or authorised third parties. It extends the concept of an intranet (an internal network accessible only within an organisation) to include external stakeholders, providing controlled access to selected portions of an organisation’s network or intranet.

Key aspects of an extranet include:

  1. Limited Access: Unlike the public internet, an extranet is a restricted network that requires authentication and authorisation for access. External users granted access can interact with certain parts of an organisation’s internal systems or resources.
  2. Secure Collaboration: Extranets facilitate secure collaboration and communication between an organisation and its external partners or stakeholders. They allow for the exchange of sensitive information, documents, project updates, or resources in a secure environment.
  3. Access Control and Permissions: Access to the extranet is controlled through authentication mechanisms, such as usernames, passwords, or more advanced authentication methods like two-factor authentication (2FA) or digital certificates. Access rights and permissions are typically managed to ensure that users can only access authorized resources.
  4. Shared Resources: Organisations use extranets to share specific resources like documents, databases, project plans, or applications with external parties. This allows for streamlined collaboration, data sharing, and improved coordination among partners or clients.
  5. Enhanced Communication: Extranets often include communication tools like email, messaging systems, discussion forums, or collaborative workspaces, enabling efficient and secure communication between internal and external users.
  6. Security Measures: Security protocols, encryption, firewalls, and other security measures are employed to protect data transmitted across the extranet and prevent unauthorised access or breaches.

Examples of extranet usage include:

  • A company collaborating with its suppliers to share inventory data, order information, or production schedules.
  • A healthcare provider sharing patient records securely with authorised external medical specialists or insurance companies.
  • Educational institutions providing access to specific resources for students, faculty, and collaborating research partners.
