In the context of computing and the internet, a cookie refers to a small piece of data that websites store on a user’s device, typically within a web browser, to track and remember information about the user’s interactions and preferences on the site. Cookies serve various purposes, including enhancing user experience, personalising content, and enabling website functionalities.

Types: There are different types of cookies:

  • Session Cookies: Temporary cookies that expire when the user closes the browser. They are used to track user activities during a browsing session.
  • Persistent Cookies: Stored for a longer period on the user’s device and are not deleted when the browser is closed. They can remember user preferences and settings for future visits.
  • First-party Cookies: Set by the website the user is visiting and can only be read by that site.
  • Third-party Cookies: Created by domains other than the one the user is visiting, often by advertisers or analytics services. They track user behaviour across different websites.

Purpose: Cookies are used for various purposes:

  • Authentication: Keeping users logged in by remembering their credentials.
  • Preferences: Storing settings and preferences chosen by the user.
  • Analytics: Tracking user behaviour and gathering data for website analysis.
  • Advertising: Delivering targeted ads based on user interests and browsing history.
