Consumer lists are databases of individual contact details and profiles used by marketers to target specific groups of consumers for promotional or sales activities. These lists typically include names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and often additional data such as demographics, purchase history, lifestyle preferences, or interests.
There are two main types:
- House lists – owned by a business and made up of existing customers, leads, or subscribers. These are often more reliable and responsive.
- Rented or purchased lists – sourced from third-party providers and used for broader outreach, though often with less accuracy or engagement.
Consumer lists are vital for direct marketing campaigns, such as email, postal, or telemarketing. However, their use must comply with data protection laws (like GDPR in the UK and EU), ensuring that individuals have consented to receive marketing communications or that there is a lawful basis for contacting them. Proper list management also includes regular cleaning to remove outdated or unresponsive contacts and avoid reputational or legal issues.
