Case Study

In our early days, I took on a formidable challenge: developing a complete digital ecosystem for a startup dating platform. With no prior experience in the sector and limited resources, I had to network and innovate quickly.

The client was looking for a new brand developed from scratch for a dating portal with profile-matching algorithms that had a personal override for the owner. Although the technology was only just emerging for linking this to mobile apps, we created a mobile-linked database for real-time updates.

The client also wanted to run singles events, so the website included integrated event management.

All this was built on a startup budget and a fledgling organisation.

I adopted a lean methodology that remained true to my philosophy of being customer-centric: I started with some market research – analysing competitor UX flows and identifying gaps in niche dating experiences. Due to a lack of development experience, I made the fortunate mistake of leading a modular development project, building core matching functionality first, then developing additional features. As the web and mobile technology was still quite new, I had to identify some hybrid technology where we had to combine off-the-shelf solutions with some custom-coded elements to control costs.

Some of the innovations we were most proud of included developing a “Date Night” algorithm pairing users attending the same events. We created the mobile check-in system for the administrator, but we couldn’t extend this to customer mobiles, as most people still had ‘dumb-phones’.

We designed a viral referral incentive programme to drive organic growth.

We saw considerable membership growth in the first 6 months and strong event attendance.
